Traffic Apps in Kenya: Ma3Route vs Waze

Today Safaricom partnered with Google to launch  Waze, an interactive phone app that provides motorists with real-time traffic information crowd-sourced data from other road users.

Waze, which originated in Israel, was bought by Google for $1.3 billion in 2013. But while Waze has 3 million global users, its maps are sparsely used in Nairobi. There’s been a bit of discussion about why Safaricom is partnering with Waze when they have Ma3Route on Safari com

In Kenya, another platform, Ma3Route, has become the de-facto central point for traffic information which many people check before they start their car engines, both to see how clear the roads are and which routes are best. Ma3Route’s 300,000 daily users largely tweet or read about traffic conditions  and shares stories and traffic frustrations across its mobile apps, website, facebook and twitter.

Data Direction: Authoritative local tech blog TechMoran links the Safaricom-Waze partnership to Google using Safaricom to increase downloads and uptake of Waze. big data means a lot to both Google and Safaricom.

In contrast, Ma3Route bills itself as the twitter for traffic, taking simple text and placing it on maps with one of their objectives being to be light on battery and data bundle consumption.

Reading the Tea leaves at Centum, Kenya Airways, Safaricom

Three companies that had their year-end in March 2014 have just published their annual reports which are now found on their individual websites. 

Centum
Has  a (massive ) 160 page annual report and 37,000 shareholders

  • At the August 2014 AGM shareholders will be asked to approve items including:
  1. The incorporation of Two Rivers Property owners Company
  2. The incorporation of Two Rivers lifestyle Centre limited Kenya branch
  3. The acquisition of 30% shareholding in Broll Kenya
  4. The acquisition of 73% shareholding in Genesis investment Managers Kenya
  5.  The incorporation of King Beverages
  6. The incorporation of Bakki Holdco
  7. The incorporation of Shefa Holdings

Other Notes

  • Rent income went from Kshs 6 billion in 2013 to Kshs 17 million in 2014?
  •  Other income was Kshs 443M, up from 12M
  • Cash flow went from Kshs 1.5B  to (minus)  -448<
  • The restated accounts have Kshs 237M paid to company shareholders, yet there are no dividends declared to be paid this year
  • For Genesis, they paid 1 billion for a company worth 153 million
  • They raised Kshs 4.1 billion in 2012 at about 13%
  • Centum Exotics owe Kshs 2 billion, Centum developments owe 1.8 billion and Two Rivers owe 2.5 billion to the company

Centum’s investments include 17.8%  of General Motors East Africa, 15% of NAS Air  services, 27% of KWAL, 27% of Nairobi Bottlers & 43% of Almasi (Coca Cola bottlers), 35% of Platinum Credit, 1.6% of K-Rep bank, and 21.5% of AON Minet & 13.8% of UAP insurance companies

Kenya Airways (KQ)
130 page annual report and has 77 000 shareholders.

  • Are owed Kshs 156 million of Precision Airline of Tanzania (down from 242M)  and they own 41% of the airline.  KLM owns 27% of KQ. KQ are owed 4 billion by Aircraft Cargo Handling  and they owe the company back 7 billion
  • Have 12 year loans with Afrexim, Citibank, Stanchart that are guaranteed by USEximBank, while Co-Op bank financed purchase of a spare Embraer engine. The loans are at rates of 3.5 to 6.5%, and total $1 billion
  • KQ has paid Kshs 27 billion in airline deposits, and got a refund of about Kshs 2.8 billion in 2014 (from Boeing?). KQ also has Kshs 26 billion of aircraft lease commitments in the future.

The B787-8 aircraft will replace the B767- 300s on a one for one basis. The B777-300ERs provide growth in capacity. The B737-300s exit the fleet as JamboJet gains it’s Operating Certificate and determines its own fleet requirements. Two of the E170s will be returned to the lessor as will two B737- 800s, which will be replaced with new leased aircraft. KQ Embraer 190

The most important project for the Information Systems team during the year under review was the Boeing 787 e-Enabling project. The project was set up in February 2013 to implement the e-Enabling platform design recommended by Boeing for the B787 aircraft. The purpose of the e-Enabling platform is to ensure secure transfer of B787 Aircraft Software from Boeing servers to Kenya Airways servers and subsequently into the B787 aircraft.

  • JamboJet lost Kshs 118 million so far, but KQ will apply a deferred tax of 221 million from Flamingo, their previous low cost subsidiary airline against that
  • KQ sas 4,000  employees and also has an ESOP that has been inactive since 2006 (with 2 million shares) . While outgoing CEO Naikuni (famously) still has no shares, directors with shares include Alex Mbugua with 25,000 while Chairman Evans Mwaniki has 42,000.
  •   Spent Kshs 40 billion on fuel & oil, and 8 billion on aircraft hire. Have  Kshs 1 billion in fuel derivatives
  • Have Kshs 106 billion in revenue (85% from passenger flights) and 89% of revenue is foreign (i.e. non-local flights) and they fly to 62 foreign destinations
  • Putting a damper on Africa Rising, the Chairman’s statement notes that

African airlines international air travel expanded by 5.5% in 2013, a solid result but slower than growth in 2012 (7.5%). Overall, the demand backdrop for carriers in the region was strong, with robust economic growth of local economies and continued development of internationally trading industries. But some parts of the continent showed weakness, including the South African economy which recently experienced a slowdown. There has also been some slowdown in regional trade growth

  • The Kshs 5 billion loss in 2014 is an improvement from an 11 billion loss the year before.

Safaricom

  • The Communications Authority (ex-CCK) gave Safaricom credit of Kshs 542 million against a license of Kshs 696 million.

Safaricom’s operating licence was issued for a period of 15 years from 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2014. On 25 June 2014, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), formerly the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), confirmed the renewal of Safaricom’s operating licence for a further ten years from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2024 at a renewal fee of USD 27 million.

  • Own 32% of TEAMS  (up from 22.5%). The company  acquired 10% at a cost of (just) Kshs 550, 620?!  TEAMS  had revenue of Kshs 382 million and a profit of Kshs 42 million in 2014. In 2013 they paid Kshs 556 million for the remaining 49% of One Communication which also has a deferred tax asset of Kshs 204 million.
  • There is an M-Pesa holding company that is separate from the company and who are trustees of all the funds that are held in M-Pesa. There is also a Safaricom Foundation that participates in many (small) projects and an M-Pesa foundation that is involved in larger (and fewer) projects.
  • Have Kshs 12 billion of bonds that retire in the next 18 month (7 billion in Nov 2014 and 4.2 billion in Dec 2015)
  • Bonga points; 84% of the points redeemed were for non-merchandise items (airtime, voice minutes, data bytes and SMS) while 16% were redeemed for merchandise items (phones, tablets?) in 2014.
  • The company bid and won a Kshs 201 million deal to brand Kasarani stadium and gymnasium
  • Lipa Kodi has 88 housing agents collecting rent from 60,000 houses while 122,000 merchants have signed on with Lipa Na M-Pesa
  • Directors: Chairman Nicholas Nganga has 885,00 shares, Michael Joseph has 2.3 million, Esther Koimett 517,000 and CEO Bob Collymore has 908,000
  • The newspapers in August 2014 note that shareholders will be asked to approve base station purchase from Yu for $1 million

The 2014 Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowships Programme is now accepting applications and those selected will receive mentoring from leaders at key multilateral institutions, namely the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Trade Centre (ITC), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). To apply for this fellowship you must be a national of an African country,  have 7-10 years of relevant work experience, have a Master’s Degree, be under the age of 40 (or 45 for women with children) and the  deadline for submissions is 12 September.

The newly launched  Open and Collaborative Science in Development Network (OCSDNet) will provide funding support (of $50,000 to $80,000 CAD) to up to 15 case studies from eligible countries, mainly to researchers and practitioners affiliated with organizations based in countries that are eligible for support by the IDRC (these include within the Global South (Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, East and South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa). The deadline for submissions is September 8.

The Orange African Social Venture Prize  2014 aims to promote social innovation by supporting development through information and communication technologies (ICT). In addition to funding of up to 25,000 euros, Orange will provide support to three projects for six months from its local subsidiaries as well as expert advice from business and telecoms professionals, and the winner will benefit from a patent application that will be submitted and paid by Orange. Also, a special prize of 10,000 euros will be awarded to a project which has used an Orange API. Deadline is September 19.

Pivot East’s Mobile Impact Ventures Program (“MIVP”). The Mlab, East Africa’s accelerator program for impact ventures with innovative solutions in agriculture, health & water and education, is currently seeking applications for its second cohort. The program is backed by the Rockefeller and Tony Elumelu Foundations, through the Global Impact Investment Network’s (“GIIN”) Africa Impact Economy Innovations Fund (“IEIF”). The deadline is 27 August.

The Safaricom Journalism Fellowship Program at Strathmore University is designed to provide skills which combine technology literacy with business literacy for journalists engaged in business writing across the media houses in Kenya. The program will admit 15 of the most promising candidates in the first year.

Google RISE Awards are grants for organizations across the globe that promote Computer Science (CS) education or run initiatives that reach girls, underrepresented minorities, and students facing socio-economic barriers under age 18. Grants range from $15,000 to $50,000.

 Innovation Prize for Africa aims at mobilising leaders from all sectors to fuel African innovation in key sectors such as science, technology and engineering which contribute towards the sustainability of Africa. The IPA is becoming integral to facilitating ground-breaking thinking, creativity and driving awareness to the outstanding work being done in Africa by Africans. Entries for the Innovation Prize for Africa (IPA) 2015 are now open and the deadline for entries is 31 October 2014.  Note the IPA 2013 winner, AgriProtein went on to raise $11 million to build its first two commercial farms in Cape Town, South Africa.

Morland Writing Scholarships  are available for published works of between 2,000 to 5,000 words from anyone who has been born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa. They are worth £18,000 and the application deadline is October 31.

Mobile East Africa 2014, Day 1

#mea2014 is a cool annual event that has since 2010, strived to showcase a lot of mobile phone developments in Africa. 
Some highlights of Day on February 12, in Nairobi
Host of the morning session, Mark Kaigwa, started off with a comment that there’s been a lot of hope, but  also a lot of hype around the whole silicon savannah story, and that the event was about hearing some stories of actualization of developments
Veronica Ogeto-Tchoketch Head Of Innovation at Safaricom spoke about recent innovations the company that aimed to transform lives and these included: 
– iCow: A partnership with Green Dreams that offers dairy and poultry farmers information by SMS to maximize their yields, and now has 12,800 farmers.
– Shupavu291: In partnership with Eneza education, is a study tool for primary school students  that now has 170,000 users on monthly or weekly subscriptions.
– JamiiSmart is a maternity app that aims to reduce mortality rates of mothers and children from childbirth to 5 years by sending alerts on immunization, medical visits, medication etc.
– Lindajamii aims to counter a low 3% insurance penetration rate in Kenya – and so Safaricom partnered with Changamka and BritAm to come up with a basic in & out patient medical cover for families that also includes funeral benefit and maternity cover with monthly m-pesa payments staggered.
– Refugees United: In partnership with Ericsson and UNHCR, they developed a tool that refugees could use to track relatives they’ve lost track of through a platform that provides confidentiality and security.
– M-Kopa: Is a solar panel solution that is able to light 3 rooms in a home, and also charge mobile phones. 40,000 customers have signed up for this, and payments can be via m-pesa.
– Vuma online  they equipped select matatus/PSV’s (now 3,000) with 3G modems – and now some youth ask if a matatu has vuma before boarding. They plan to extend the data penetration services to restaurants, train stations, barbers etc.
– M-pesa  has now been extended to M-Shwari (loans to individuals) and M-Pesa online (pay for goods bought online via m-pesa)

The partnerships have been developed with Safaricom’s valued business partners including Huawei, BritAm, iLabAfrica, Commercial Bank of Africa, Seven Seas, among others.
In the Q&A session she mentioned that they want to work in agriculture, health, fishing in 2014 and people can send suggestions to innovation_at_safaricom.co.ke – but that app proposals were not enough to get one access to Safaricom assets like USSD, API, and research. She also appealed  to the government to open up spectrum to mobile operators. 
Dr. Bitange Ndemo, who’s the honorary chairperson, Alliance For Affordable Internet said that Africa has the most inefficiencies of any continent and said that the release of information by broadband / mobile as one way of sorting these. He said African government make a mistake by auctioning spectrums – and said the 700, 800, 2600 MHz spectrum ones should be given at the lowest prices or even free as they will spur commerce that will generate more than enough taxes to pay these  back.

Mark Redman the CTIO of Smile Tanzania which launched 4G last year in Uganda and Tanzania that uses 800mhz and offers excellent broadband to on the move mobile devices. He said 4G has more possibility that  3G as one can share many connections over Wi-Fi, can tether, stream HD, do FaceTime, Skype, all with no buffering.

They are see seeing behavior change – and also some bill shock with their customers as 13MB/second download to a mobile service leads to an  average consumption that is greater than 10 gigabytes per month

They now cover Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Entebbe and Ibadan and soon Lagos and also into the DRC – giving them a presence in 4 large African markets.

in Tanzania they are using national backbone, metro fiber in TZ – – and have to lease capacity which is not great as they want to be a carrier. Google offer an interesting proposition in Uganda so may work with them and talking with Google and IBM on other ways of reducing costs including delivering internet without telcos. Smile is a service provider, not an infrastructure company. they lease towers (from Airtel, Helios) but see that  monopolization of towers is becoming a problem. 


They are aiming for 5G next, and want to deliver all that was promised to Africa on 3G and he predicted that by next year it will be hard to sell an android smartphone that is not 4G capable.

  
Tomi Ahonen who Forbes magazine called one of the world’s most influential expert in mobile gave a special address –  The Near Future Of Mobile: Where Is The Opportunity?. This was his 62ndcountry to visit and 99th city to speak in about mobile stories. 

Highlights

– The convergence of mobile – many companies are now interested in mobile including PC giants  who now think the future is mobile   – such as HP (who regret abandoning mobile, and are now coming back), Lenovo (buying Motorola from Google), Sony (sold laptops biz to focus on mobile) and Microsoft spent $7b to buy Nokia

– Prevalence – There are as many mobile phone subscriptions as there are people in the world. This is unprecedented, and even pen & paper, and wrist watches never got this reach

– Grand convergence – 15 global industries will fully migrate into mobile (if not completely) movies, music, advertising, telecom, Internet, computer, credit, bank, insurance, watch, camera, map, print, broadcast, and social media. Some are already on the way there with  camera already gone 90% mobile, and music at 40% – but there is a lot of opportunity in the others to enable this transformation. Also any of these industries, can cross over and capture customers in another segment – as was seen with camera phones, introduced in 2001, but which have now wiped up traditional analog camera companies (today Nokia is the most used camera brand, and Samsung is best selling camera – while Kodak, Polaroid Minolta have all gone,. Also unfathomable in 2000 was that computers would enter the music business, but today  iTunes is the world biggest music store.

– Mobile is the 7th mass media – 1st Print (1500)  2nd Records (1890s), then Cinema (1910) Radio (1920) TV (1950) Internet (1995) Mobile (2000s). Also mobile is different from the internet and while it is difficult to make money on the internet, it is easier to make money on mobile. …He said that 8th mass media will be augmented reality.

– Has very accurate audience info

Ood features like SMS are still very powerful as seen by corporates like Omo, Carrefour, Finnair- who through various campaigns are able to generate paid customer responses that range from 30% to 300%
– He cited Alan Moore by saying that said mobile user data is the new black gold for the 21st century, and it’s possible that by year 2030, the Fortune 500 companies will be topped by companies that drill for data, not for oil. 

– $10 iPhone Android is the future, but in future based on Moore law, in which the processing power doubles and the costs halve every 18 months, there will be a $10 iPhone (or an equivalent of that) by year 2019.
– What can Kenya learn from his Finland? Developers was not to be afraid to fail, but to learn and try again – noting that Rovio (of Angry Birds)  failed 51 times before they had the hit game.

Tim Legg CEO Ole! Media Group spoke of the challenges of delivering media digitally in Africa. He said mobile is not internet – and that since the advent of the internet, very few digital publishers make money from digital media and that is not sustainable – whereas mobile media is sustainable.

 –  – Independent mobile media businesses need to be self funded
– Even next year there will still be 1 smart phone for every 5,6 feature phone in south Africa –  so forget about the super apps. It is still a feature phone media world where USSD and SMS work perfectly ok, and  they see increase in unique growers on all digital platforms. 
– Their growth is predominantly through the mobile channels but the durations have dropped,  as have average number of visits have dropped.
— Mobile can compliment traditional media – allow interaction and enable payments – something which internet has never done
–  – Move away from the old newspapers model of charging readers a monthly subscription paid by credit card to one pay per use billed to a mobile phone
-Publishers can’t make enough money from advertising to pay for content creation – and advertising in Africa has been driven down by Google and is heading to zero.
– Mobile growth is also found in what are considered dying markets like the UK
– Start with feature phone (SMS) move to smart phones, touch phones, then tablets to grow the media ad network

Praekelt works with Guinness Smirnoff Johnny Walker and banks and insurance. They also have a Parekelft Foundation when realized some of tech work done for big brands was really cool and could also make a difference in the world
He spoke of developing universal tech that anyone can access and use it to make their lives better  – and they do it on open source tools like vumi
They have worked in 17 countries across Africa on initiatives that revolves around the base of the pyramid – where  60% of people are (earning less than $2.5 per day) and 50% of these have internet access, but 99% have access to mobile phones
Some of these include
– a text alert to remind people to go get doctor check-ups – people can now send message back (2 weeks old)
– Guinness you’re the boss – a fantasy football game that 5 people can play at the same time, al on USSD. It’s in 5 countries and got 200,000 users in 4 months.
– Wikipedia text -100,000 users in 3 months, 400,000 searches. He  pleads with Safaricom to make Wikipedia free  (*515#)
Robert Lamptey, the CEO of Saya spoke about preparing his company for international expansion. The company started as a way for students who could not afford expensive SMS to send messages through installing an app on their feature phones, access the phone books and  mimic SMS messages
